It is An Accessible World!

It is An Accessible World!

This weekend I watched the series of accessibility videos and I was amazed at the wealth of tools available across the platforms. Here are some of my 'take aways' from the videos.

Android - I was amazed at the number options on the android, I hadn’t thought there would be so many.  I was wondering if there are differences between android devices as they are not all built be the same company.

Chromebook  - I was so waiting with baited breath for you to make me like the Chromebook again after the disastrous search for apps last week.  The chrome Vox was new to me and it seemed like a useful feature.  My students have early enjoyed the speech to text options in Google docs.  I do not think I can say anything particularly positive about the chrome Web Store...still too many bad memories

iPad - it is truly impressive to imagine that every iPad you see walking around in someone's hand, sitting on a desk or being used in a classroom come with these accessibility features automatically included.  The switch options really amazing, they could be controlled by a right or left movement of your head!  Touch accommodations was very cool and I loved that this (and many of the other features too) had so much room for personalized input when setting up the tool.  The speech to text and text to speech functions were super cool.  It moved so smoothly between languages!

Mac Laptop - this had the magnification window just like the iPad which seemed like an awesome tool.  The voice over options were incredibly extensive and it was easy to imagine the huge impact these features would have for some with a visual exceptionality.

PC Laptop - are the accessibility features determined by the manufacturer of the device or by the operating system?  There were some functions but it was a pretty sad selection to end with after all of those amazing assistive tools from earlier!
